Rising Artist of the Week

Mick Jenkins

I discovered Mick Jenkins a couple of months ago. And I fell in love with his “Pieces of a Man” album. Mick’s music is made for a niche audience. And this I can appreciate. He fits into the neo-soul genre of hip-hop or what some call hip-hop soul, which has always existed but has been extended into new sounds. Old school rappers like Q-tip, Mos Def, Common, The roots, and Slum Village brought about this concept. It was like linking poetry and rap. Takes real talent! But new rappers like Mick, are taking it to another level. And the only other rapper I know in his lane is Isaiah Rashad.
So I’ve been waiting a while for new music like this! Intellectual rap that I can vibe too. I can understand the lyrics and immediately turn them into a feeling. There were a lot of jazz elements used throughout the album. He also uses repetitive basslines intertwined with light melodies. His voice is perfect for sitting in this pocket. And if you’re 4/20 friendly and need music to go along with your sess then this album is the go-to! Lol’
