Home Grown- Vanjess

Vanjess has done it again! The Nigerian-American sisters, Ivanna and Jess recently released their 2nd Album, Homegrown and it’s nothing short of amazing! Vanjess stays true to themselves while continuing to elevate their sound with every project. If you haven’t heard this album or the first, then get into it!

Their last full-length project was Silk Canvas in 2018. This album is timeless and features some of my favorite artists. I could’ve lived with continuing to listen to this album. It was so good that I didn’t even anticipate what was coming next. But the following year they went on to release the Silk Canvas (The Remixes) which was a perfect way to reimagine the original album. Now, this what put us on our toes.

VanJess created a flawless setup for the release of Homegrown. Their fans were ready! They gave us a taste by putting out the single, Curious featuring Jimi Tents & Garren first. And then followed it up with a polished tracklist full of stylish ’90s like sounds and vocals. It’s the perfect mesh of funk, neo-soul but with a modern twist. I can also see the growth and maturity of their brand which is refreshing. In my opinion, these ladies are in a lane of their own. I think music lovers like myself appreciate that!

VanJess dedicated this album to their late father. “This has been a truly devastating month, and the worst day of our lives on what was meant to be one of the most exciting times,” they write in their caption. “Being on the phone with the hospital and unable to be with our dad in person was awful. They let us come the day before he passed and we were on our hands and knees praying and crying out to him. He was truly an angel, our best friend and all he wanted was for us to follow our dreams. So we will continue on. We are at peace knowing he is looking down on us and would be so proud of us and we dedicate Homegrown to him.”
