Talk about putting your heart and soul into it! Summer Walker’s second studio album, “Still Over it” is one well-thought-out piece of work! Everything was on point from the marketing to the actual music. Summer Walker really took the time to create something synergetic. It’s cohesive and innovative yet still on target.
I was anticipating Summer’s new album. But being honest, I wasn’t sure how it would turn out. Obviously, not having producer, London on da Track was a concern. But what was even more concerning to me, is how she would top the previous album, “Over it”. She released, “Ex for a Reason” as her first single which is great for a radio hit but the single alone can feel a bit lackluster. That is until you hear the full body of work at least. The full album is diverse so it makes sense why the single was included and released first.
I’m so happy that she kept the same theme and direction but took it a little further. You can tell she did some exploring with this project. And it served her well. She took nodes from every artist she worked with but still kept it Summer. I love how she used her relationship with London as fuel. That’s what music is about! And in today’s time, it definitely makes for good marketing, so you mind as well. You can feel her passion. It’s real and relatable. It also makes everything fit together so imperfectly perfect.
I appreciated how all the interludes, such as the viral and already infamous “Ciara’s Prayer” were on-brand with the theme. “Bitter (Narration by Cardi B)” was also a great way to start off the album. They added to the story. All the features made sense and had a purpose. I don’t like when the features don’t make sense or outshine the main artists. It takes away from the album.
I’m proud of Summer Walker. As a new artist who gained such a huge following so quickly, continuing to top yourself can be daunting, especially when you have social media in your ear. But I think using your real-life experiences as a foundation can help you find your bag. Safe to say, I’ll be doing the ‘summer slide’ all weekend long.
