Young Nudy has a reputation for being a voracious eater. He is the MF DOOM of East Atlanta and the quintessential cuisine enthusiast. All of his devoted followers can expect and actually anticipate the release of culinary-themed joints like “Loaded Baked Potato,” “Sunflower Seeds,” and “Blue Cheese Salad”. For this new project “Gumbo”, Nudy has served us up a 13-course meal. Each song focuses on a distinct aspect of the food pyramid: “Okra” and “Brussel Sprout” for your daily serving of greens, “McChicken” or “Fish & Chips” for lunch, and a piece of “Passion Fruit” to clear your palate.
If there were a phrase I could use to describe Young Nudy’s music, It’d be “in the pocket”. The animated cadence in conjunction with the hard-hitting treble and bass cooperatively infuses with his flow and witty lyrics. I see why he uses food as an analogy because he definitely has the recipe.
Nudy’s projects have become more precise over time, with each release there is more cohesion and clarity. Out of all his projects, this one is sequenced with greater care. Gumbo plays remarkably similar to the fire project, “EA Monster” from the previous year, down to the cover art’s identical slime-green and red color palette. This is the album you play in the car swangin’ and bangin’ (safely) through the streets; Or if you’re trying to show your proficiency in trap music. Young Nudy’s eclectic taste is what has given rise to his unique following and prevents his work from ever becoming formulaic.
Fav’ Songs
- Brussel Sprout– A good introduction to the album. It doesn’t come on too strong. And creates a great bridge to the next track.
- Pancake- It’s the way Nudy uses his flow to Ride the beat on this track for me. It’s dense and rigid yet not over complicated.
- Pot Roast (feat. Key Glock)- This beat on this track is more grandiose than the others. But the repetitiveness of it allows the song to breathe, adding more value to the verses.
- Peaches & Eggplants (feat. 21 Savage)– I just love Nudy and 21 Savage together. The contrast of their styles meshes together so seamlessly. This track will make you act out.
- Fish & Chips- This track is groovy in the most trap way. It’s the song you let play next, not realizing how hard it is. The goodness of it sneaks up on you.
- Passion Fruit-A sensational vibe. A nice sexy way to conclude the album. It’s the dessert of the 13-course meal, hence the name. Definitely a late night 420 friendly joint.
