Why I Made This List of Black-Owned Businesses in Brooklyn
A few weeks ago, a TikTok clip I posted from a Brooklyn block party went viral—but not in the way I expected. While many enjoyed the moment, others raised concerns about gentrification and the changing face of Brooklyn. I understood where the frustration was coming from—gentrification is a real and painful issue that continues to displace Black communities and erase our cultural landmarks.
In my response video, I encouraged folks to look deeper, to hold space for nuance, and most importantly—to support Black-owned businesses in Brooklyn. I mentioned I’d create a list, and the viewers were for it. So here it is: a curated guide to some of the incredible Black-owned spots that make Brooklyn what it is—resilient, vibrant, and full of soul.
Whether you’re a local or just passing through, I hope this list helps you show love to the real heartbeat of Brooklyn. Please feel free to recommend businesses not included.
